Crematogaster ourea
Salata, Ziecina & Borowiec, 2024

A nest of Crematogaster ourea was found on a mountain plateau at an altitude of 1,643 m. The plateau extends 1.3 km long and 400 m wide at the foot of Mt. Megali Tourla. It is covered with grassy vegetation with numerous herbs and with low fir trees growing on the surrounding slopes (Figs 5–6). The nest was located between two flat limestone slabs on the slope of a small cracked limestone rock (Fig. 7). In the second location, one worker was found on a limestone rock inside a luminous fir forest at an altitude of 1,090 m. On the same site the following ant species were collected: Formica cunicularia, Lasius alienus Messor ibericus, Plagiolepis pygmaea, Proformica oculatissima, Tapinoma cf. erraticum_BALC, Temnothorax parnonensis, Temnothorax semiruber, Temnothorax cf. tuberum, Temnothorax unifasciatus, and Tetramorium kephalosi.

Identification

Crematogaster ourea differs from C. ionia and Crematogaster schmidti in the presence of more than 10 large erect setae on the first gastral tergite. Additionally, it differs from C. ionia in yellowish brown to brown mesosoma colouration. While from Crematogaster erectepilosa (which also has numerous erected setae on the first gastral tergite), C. ourea differs in the presence of subdecumbent and never erect setae on the anterior surface of the antennal scape and the presence of less than 20 large erect setae on the first gastral tergite and less than 10 erect setae on the pronotal dorsum. Also, both species are separated geographically. Crematogaster ourea is known from alpine habitats of Parnon Mts of the south-eastern Peloponnese while C. erectepilosa in Greece is known from the Aegean Islands and Dodecanese (Kandelioussa, Karpathos, Kos, Nera, Rhodes, and Samos) (Scupola and Borowiec 2023).
