Preliminary key to the Crematogaster species known from Greece (based on Salata et al. (2024), after Salata & Borowiec (2015)).

  • Petiole subquadrate in dorsal view, sides almost parallel; antennal club 2-segmented => Crematogaster sordidula
  • Petiole trapezoidal narrowing from front to rear in dorsal view, antennal club 3-segmented => 2

  • First gastral tergite with more than 10 erect setae that are longer than half of the length of the maximum vertical diameter of the eye => 3
  • First gastral tergite with less than 10 erect setae that are longer than half of the length of the maximum vertical diameter of the eye => 4

  • Antennal scape on anterior surface on whole length with erect setae; first gastral tergite with more than 30 erect setae that are longer than half of the length of the maximum vertical diameter of the eye. Dodecanese and Samos of the Aegean Islands => Crematogaster erectepilosa
  • Antennal scape on anterior surface on whole length with subdecumbent setae; first gastral tergite with less than 20 erect setae that are longer than half of the length of the maximum vertical diameter of the eye. Parnon Mountains => Crematogaster ourea

  • Pronotum without rugae, dorsal surface punctate and microreticulate, dull; mesonotal keel absent => Crematogaster lorteti
  • Pronotum at least on sides with more or less distinct rugae, dorsal surface more or less shiny; mesonotal keel present, at least in the form of short longitudinal tubercle => 5

  • Body distinctly bicoloured, head and mesosoma yellowish, red to reddish-brown, abdomen dark brown or with peduncle and base of the first gastral tergine reddish-brown. Rugae on anterior part of pronotum usually transverse => Crematogaster schmidti
  • Body unicolours, brown to almost black or head and mesosoma only indistinctly paler coloured than abdomen. Rugae on whole pronotum usually longitudinal or on pronotal sides oblique, occasionally in anterior part transverse => Crematogaster ionia
