Brachyponera species groups
While the genus Brachyponera was still synonymized under Pachycondyla, Yamane (2007) originally proposed three informal species groups, primarily distinguished by size. In their 2025 revision of Chinese species, Chen et al. redefined the species group classification, recognizing eight distinct species groups. This revised framework is clearly articulated in the Discussion section of their publication, though the synoptic list presents the classification in a somewhat ambiguous format. Yamane’s (2007) three species groups were retained but were further expanded, refined, and, in one instance, renamed. This page adheres to the most recent species group classification proposed by Chen et al. (2025).
