Nomenclature
The following information is derived from Barry Bolton's Online Catalogue of the Ants of the World.
- †corniger. †Gesomyrmex corniger Emery, 1891a: 155, pl. 3, figs. 33-35 (w.) SICILIAN AMBER (Oligocene).
- Combination in †Sicelomyrmex: Wheeler, W.M. 1915h: 111 (in text).
- [Note: the later proposed emendation of spelling to †Sicilomyrmex by Brown & Carpenter, 1979: 423, may be unnecessary. In various publications Wheeler uses both Sicelomyrmex and Sicilomyrmex, with the former being the original, and also the one he used in his 1929a review of the group. It may be that the genus was originally named for the Sicels (one of the original tribes of Sicily), rather than after the island itself. In consequence the maintenance of the original orthography is recommended here.]
- Status as species: Dalla Torre, 1893: 176; Handlirsch, 1907: 860; Wheeler, W.M. 1915h: 111; Wheeler, W.M. 1929a: 11; Brown & Carpenter, 1979: 423 (redescription); Keilbach, 1982: 280; Bolton, 1995b: 383.
