Flat-back Carpenter Ants (See also Myrmepinotus, Myrmopiromis, Myrmotrema, and Myrmisolepis.)
Diagnosis. Emery (1925). - "Worker and queen. - Medium to small species; caste dimorphism somewhat marked. Head of majors large, wider than long, truncated posteriorly, sometimes with distinct ocelli (at least in C. sericeus, F.); more-or-less rounded in minors (Plate 3, Fig 7, 7a). Clypeus short, with anterior lobe rounded, sometimes notched medially. Worker mesosoma robust, with strong impression or notch anterior to propodeum; (C. sericeus, F., mayri, Forel, selene, Emery), sometimes mesosoma more-or-less rounded (C. wasmanni, Emery , dolfleini, Forel); pronotum usually rounded, but in wasmanni pronotal shoulders dendate, and in selene, the whole mesosomal dorsum is marginate and pronotal shoulders extended into strong teeth. Petiole nodiform, prominently rounded, coarsely punctate-foveolate. Cuticle matte, often covered with harsh punctation. Male. - Forel described the male of C. sericeus which is unknown to me.
Geographical distribution of species. - Afrotropics, India, Sri Lanka, Indochina.
Note: This subgenus plus Myrmepinotus, Myrmopiromis, Myrmotrema, and Myrmisolepis constitute a natural group which is essentially African."
