Formica brunneonitida Dlussky, 1964 |
This species is known from open, semidry to fresh dry grassland and with a similar frequency also within grassy and sunny spots of broad-leafed, mixed and coniferous forest. It constructs small mounds of finely cut grass pieces. Occurrence in harsh environments at 4750 m altitude in SW Tibet and near Okhotsk in E Siberia indicates a high frost resistance. It is unknown if the species forms polygynous-polydomous colonies. Alates occur 11 July ± 18 days [26 June – 10 August] n= 6 which is just the same period as in Formica forsslundi (Seifert 2018). Host species for socially parasitic colony foundation is most probably Formica candida which was present in any locality where F. brunneonitida has been found.
