In Japan, O. glaber is commonly distributed southwards from the Kanto district in grasslands and at forest margins. It nests in dead twigs, in rotting wood and under stones. These ants often attack the nests of polistine or sphecid wasps nesting in dead bamboo stems. Malfunction of railroad signals cased by intrusion of O. glaber was reported by Kubota (1974). Identification

Distribution

In Florida this is an abundant but localized introduced species found in Orange County, where it has been present for many years. Colonies may be in dead wood or in tussocks of marsh grass. Pest status: none. First published Florida record: Smith 1979. (Deyrup, Davis & Cover, 2000.)
