Nomenclature
The following information is derived from Barry Bolton's Online Catalogue of the Ants of the World.
- fossilis. Cataglyphis fossilis Cagniant, 2009: 61, figs. 18, 34, 46, 59 (w.q.m.) MOROCCO.
- Type-material: holotype worker, paratype workers (number not stated), 1 paratype queen, paratype males (number not stated).
- Type-locality: holotype Morocco: “Route des Fossiles”, Zagora to Erfoud, 950 m. (no collector’s name; probably H. Cagniant); paratypes with same data.
- Type-depositories: MNHN (holotype); HCPC, MNHN (paratypes).
- Status as species: Borowiec, L. 2014: 55.
- Distribution: Morocco.

Description
Type Material
Workers, 1 queen and males of Mellal, "Fossil Route" (hence the name) which connects Zagora to Erfoud, 950 m. Morocco. Holotype and paratypes Musee National d'Histoire Naturelle.
