Syntype of Cataglyphis bellicosa. Worker. Specimen code casent0912183. Photographer Z. Lieberman, uploaded by California Academy of Sciences. | Owned by NHMB, Basel, Switzerland. |
Nomenclature
The following information is derived from Barry Bolton's Online Catalogue of the Ants of the World.
- bellicosa. Myrmecocystus (Cataglyphis) bicolor subsp. bellicosus Karavaiev, 1924: 307 (w.) IRAN.
- Type-material: syntype workers (number not stated).
- [Note: Martynov & Radchenko, 2016: 248, cite 3w syntypes NMAS.]
- Type-locality: Iran (“Persia”): quarry nr Douchat-abad, 4 km. S Tehran, 23.ix.1916 (Bocquillon).
- [Note: the designation of a neotype by Radchenko, 1997c: 434 (Iran: Tehran (ZISP)), is redundant. He says “syntypes lost” (from SIZK), but Santschi, 1929b: 49, cites 2w syntypes NHMB, and in the original description Karavaiev also cites syntypes IZTG.]
- Type-depositories: IZTG, NHMB, NMAS.
- Combination in Cataglyphis: Agosti, 1990b: 1487.
- As unavailable (infrasubspecific) name: Santschi, 1929b: 49; Karavaiev, 1932: 250..
- Subspecies of bicolor: Agosti, 1990b: 1487; Bolton, 1995b: 134.
- Status as species: Radchenko, 1997c: 434; Radchenko, 1998: 504 (in key); Paknia, et al. 2008: 154; Borowiec, L. 2014: 52; Khalili-Moghadam, et al. 2019: 168.
- Distribution: Azerbaijan, Iran.
The following notes on V.A. Karavaiev type specimens have been provided by Martynov & Radchenko (2016) based on material held in the Institute of Zoology, Ukrainian Academy of Science:
Type locality(-ies): “Steinbruch bei Douchat-abad, 4 Kilometer südwärts von Teheran (Persien), 23.IX.1916, Bocquillon, Arbeiter. Typen in meiner Sammlung und dem Kaukasischen Museum (Tiflis)”.
Original Karawajew label(-s): “Myrmecocystus (Cataglyphis) / bicolor F. subsp. Bellicosus Karav. / Typus V. Karavaiev, 1916 / 23.IX.1916 Доухан-абадъ бл. Теге- / рана, Персия. Неизв. собиратель. Кавк. Муз. [=Doukhan-abad near Teheran, Persia, Unknown collector, Caucasian Museum]” (see also Fig. 4).
Material: SYNTYPES, 3 w (newly mounted, IN 314/6/1).
Notes. The type locality was given in the original description as “Douchat-abad” (in German), but in the original labels this place was spelled in Russian as “Доухан-абадъ” [= Doukhan-abad, in English].
Radchenko (1997b) believed that the type specimens of C. bellicosus were lost and designated the neotype worker: “Керман, ю-в Персия, В. Кузнецов, 23.III.928” [= Kerman, SE Persia, V. Kuznetzov]. As the syntype specimens of this species have been found, the neotype specimen has lost its taxonomic value.
