This species is known only from Mt. Yamizo in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan (Japanese Ant Image Database).
Identification
The only member of the Strumigenys terayamai-group.
Strumigenys terayamai is similar to Strumigenys masukoi (Terayama, 2000), but distinguishable by the following character: dorsal surface of mesosoma with simple and club-shaped hairs in S. terayamai vs. with simple and flagellate hairs in S. masukoi (Japanese Ant Image Database).

Taxonomic Notes
This species corresponds to Pyramica sp. 12 of Terayama (2000). Murata (1990) reported it as Smithistruma rostrataeformis. Unless otherwise noted the text for the remainder of this section is reported from the publication that includes the original description.
Description
Worker
Holotype. TL 2.1, HL 0.55, HW 0.42, CI 76, ML 0.09, MI 16, SL 0.32, SI 76, PW 0.29, AL 0.64. Dorsum of head finely and very densely reticulate-punctate, with curved narrowly spatulate ground-pilosity. In profile the dorsum with a pair of fine erect short simple hairs arising from the upper scrobe margin just behind the level of the frontal lobes. A similar pair of hairs arises from close to the occipital margin. In full-face view the occipital lobes each have 2 elongate curved simple hairs that freely project laterally and are weakly curved anterodorsally. With dorsum of head viewed from behind these posteriorly situated hairs are seen to be arranged in a widely spaced row. Eye very small, of 1-2 ommatidia only. Ground pilosity on dorsal alitrunk of curved long spatulate hairs, as on the head but sparser; densest on the pronotum and curved medially. Dorsal alitrunk finely and densely reticulate-punctate; mesopleuron and metapleuron with smooth areas. Dorsum and declivity of propodeum meet in a blunt but marked angle, without trace of teeth. Waist segments and first gastral tergite with simple acute standing hairs present. Legs with dense spatulate pilosity everywhere, the hairs narrow and subappressed to appressed. Disc of postpetiole glassy smooth, in dorsal view completely surrounded by spongiform tissue that is narrowest anteriorly. Basigastral costulae very short but sharply defined upon the glassy-smooth surface.
Type Material
Holotype worker, Japan: Tochigi Pref., Mt Yamizo, 20.x.1986 (K. Murata) (The Natural History Museum). Dr Mamoru Terayama has kindly donated the holotype of this species for deposition in the BMNH collection of dacetines.
