Specimen Labels

Known from its type collection, a rainforest litter-sample.

Identification

Bolton (2000) - A member of the Strumigenys extemena-group. The structure of the dorsal base of the mandible in tarbosyne is also found in Strumigenys carinognatha and Strumigenys atopogenys, but in a less strongly developed form in the latter. The mandible morphology immediately isolates these species within the group. Of the three tarbosyne is recognised by its possession of two transverse rows of erect remiform hairs on the vertex and single erect pair on the mesonotum. This is distinctly more pilose that carinognatha or atopogenys where standing hairs are restricted to a single cephalic pair or are absent, and are entirely absent from the dorsal alitrunk.

Description

Worker

Holotype. TL 1.7, HL 0.42, HW 0.35, CI 83, ML 0.12, MI 29, SL 0.18, SI 51, PW 0.21, AL 0.44. Base of dorsal surface of mandible shallowly depressed, concave both longitudinally and transversely. In dorsal view the depressed area bounded by a carina that arises slightly mesad of the outer basal angle of the mandible, runs anteriorly along the dorsum of the mandible close to its outer margin, then arches medially across the dorsal width of the mandible to meet the masticatory margin at about the third or fourth tooth from the base. Proximally the depressed area is bounded by the transverse rim that crosses the mandible in front of the anterior clypeal margin. Leading edge of scape broadly evenly rounded, bearing a series of short spoon-shaped hairs that curve toward the apex of the scape; without a large anteriorly directed hair at the greatest width of the scape but with a curved spoon-shaped hair at this point. Dorsum of head with two transverse rows of elongate remiform standing hairs. The anteriormost row contains 6 hairs and is located just in front of the highest point of the vertex; the second row has 4 hairs and is close to the occipital margin. Pronotum without projecting hairs at the humeri but mesonotum with a single pair of erect hairs present. Stout simple hairs present on waist segments and first gastral tergite, curved on the waist segments but more or less straight on the gaster. Pronotal dorsum flat, in dorsal view weakly marginate laterally, the marginations approximately straight and converging posteriorly. Propodeal declivity with lamellae but without teeth.
