Identification

Bolton (2000) - A member of the Strumigenys omopyx-group. Unlike the other two species in the group pallentra has erect hairs at the pronotal humeri. Otherwise it shows a mixture of characters of the other two: its preapical mandibular morphology and dorsolateral cephalic pilosity are like Strumigenys rantan whilst its anterior clypeal margin, preocular impression and petiole node are like omopyx.

Description

Worker

Holotype. TL 2.4, HL 0.66, HW 0.53, CI 80, ML 0.31, MI 47, SI 0.36, SI 68, PW 0.28, AL 0.62. Preapical tooth small, located upon the concave section of the apical quarter of the inner mandibular margin; angle that marks commencement of concave section of margin is proximal to preapical denticle. Anterior clypeal margin with a broad V-shaped impression. Preocular impression in anteroventral margin of head long and broadly concave. In full-face view dorsolateral margin of head with 3-4 very short stubby projecting hairs, anteriormost just behind level of eye rather than apicoscrobal; hairs directed more dorsally than laterally. With head in profile cephalic dorsum with about 6-8 pairs of short simple erect hairs; anteriormost hair is approximately at level of posterior margin of eye. Pronotal humeral hair short and blunt; standing hairs otherwise absent from dorsum of pronotum. Mesonotum with a single pair of short erect hairs. Hairs on first gastral tergite simple and blunt apically, or somewhat flattened and feebly expanded toward the apex. Petiole node broader than long in dorsal view. Reticulate sculpture on disc of postpetiole feeble everywhere but effaced medially, not evenly densely sculptured across entire disc. Basigastral costulae shorter than disc of postpetiole.

Paratype. TL 2.5, HL 0.70, HW 0.56, CI 80, ML 0.32, MI 46, SI 0.38, SI 68, PW 0.29, AL 0.67.
