Known from the type material, these specimens were found in fogging samples and suggests this is an arboreal species.
Identification
Bolton (2000) - A member of the mjoebergi complex in the Strumigenys godeffroyi-group. S. nesteryx is closest related to Strumigenys mjoebergi, the two sharing the mandibular development described under each species and lacking flagellate hairs at the pronotal humeri. The two are easily distinguished as nesteryx does not have an apicoscrobal hair, lacks costulate sculpture on the postpetiole disc, lacks erect hairs on the pronotal dorsum (except at the humeri) and has curved spatulate hairs on the first gastral tergite that are strongly inclined posteriorly.

Countries Occupied
Number of countries occupied by this species based on AntWiki Regional Taxon Lists. In general, fewer countries occupied indicates a narrower range, while more countries indicates a more widespread species. |
Estimated Abundance
Relative abundance based on number of AntMaps records per species (this species within the purple bar). Fewer records (to the left) indicates a less abundant/encountered species while more records (to the right) indicates more abundant/encountered species. |

Description
Worker
Holotype. TL 2.6, HL 0.78, HW 0.55, CI 71, ML 0.31, MI 40, SL 0.44, SI 80, PW 0.29, AL 0.71. Characters of mjoebergi-complex. Just proximal of the preapical tooth the lower border of the inner margin of the mandible projects farther toward the midline than does the upper border; in full-face view the lower border is therefore visible, projecting as a narrow convex arc beyond the line of the upper border. Apicoscrobal hair absent; dorsolateral margin of head entirely lacking freely projecting hairs. With head in full-face view the ventrolateral margin not visible behind the level of the eye. Cephalic dorsum with 4-6 very short standing hairs close to the occipital margin, head without other standing hairs. Pronotal humeral hair short and inconspicuous, weakly spatulate or slightly thickened apically; pronotal dorsum otherwise without standing hairs. Mesonotum with a single pair of very short erect hairs, resembling those at the humeri. Side of alitrunk entirely reticulate-punctate. Lateral spongiform lobe of petiole small, in profile represented only by a collar down posterior margin of node. Disc of postpetiole finely reticulate-punctate. Basigastral costulae about equal in length to disc of postpetiole but not extending half the length of the tergite. First gastral tergite with curved spatulate hairs that are strongly inclined posteriorly; second tergite with pilosity as first, without flagellate hairs.
Paratypes. TL 2.6, HL 0.76-0.78, HW 0.54, CI 70-71, ML 0.30, MI 38-39, SL 0.44, SI 81, PW 0.28-0.29, AL 0.70 (2 measured).
Dimensions of non-paratypic workers. HL 0.68-0.71, HW 0.50-0.51, CI 71-73, ML 0.28-0.29, MI 40-41, SL 0.40-0.41, SI 80, PW 0.27, AL 0.70.
