Specimen labels

Known from rainforest litter sampling.

Identification

Bolton (2000) - A member of the Strumigenys tetragnatha-group. S. fisheri is easily separated from the other two members of the group by its denser cephalic and alitrunk sculpture and its distinctive pilosity, especially on the head as described above. By contrast, in Strumigenys tetragnatha the dorsolateral margins of the head lack projecting fine hairs, whilst in Strumigenys africana such hairs are conspicuous and extremely long (longer than SL). The cephalic dorsum in tetragnatha entirely lacks standing hairs whilst that of africana has sparse but conspicuous erect flagellate hairs and very long fine ground pilosity.

Description

Worker

Holotype. TL 2.7, HL 0.74, HW 0.56, CI 76, ML 0.16, MI 22, SL 0.30, SI 54, PW 0.34, AL 0.73. Dorsolateral margin of head with 2 short simple hairs that freely project laterally, one apicoscrobal and another posterior to this; these hairs distinctly less than half the length of the scape. Cephalic dorsum with a few erect fine simple hairs posteriorly and with a pair of short erect hairs just posterior to highest point of vertex. Cephalic ground-pilosity appressed and very short, of approximately equal length everywhere and no longer than clypeal ground-pilosity. Dorsolateral margin of mesonotum with 2 erect simple hairs on each side, the posterior long and subflagellate to flagellate. Fine simple hairs present on waist segments; those on first gastral tergite simple or looped apically, some may be sub flagellate. Cephalic dorsum densely and very finely reticulate-punctate or reticulate-granulate. Cuticle within upper half of scrobes finely reticulate-punctate. Promesonotal dorsum reticulate-punctate, the pronotum usually also with some weak longitudinal costulae.

Paratypes. TL 2.6-2.7, HL 0.70-0.74, HW 0.55-0.56, CI 76-79, ML 0.14-0.16, MI 20-22, SL 0.28-0.30, SI 52-55, PW 0.32-0.34, AL 0.72-0.74 (5 measured).
