Nomenclature
The following information is derived from Barry Bolton's Online Catalogue of the Ants of the World.
- costauriensis. Pheidole rotundata st. costauriensis Santschi, 1914a: 433 (s.) GHANA. Santschi, 1915c: 250 (w.). Currently subspecies of megacephala: Bolton, 1995b: 320.
Taxonomic Notes
Taylor et al. (2018) note that all available samples and the type major are dark brown contrasting with the yellow brown Pheidole megacephala rotundata (listed as a full species, without comment or justification). They therefore propose treating this taxon as a full species. This treatment has not been followed by later authors.
