Nomenclature

- purpureum. Ponera purpurea Smith, F. 1863: 18 (w.) INDONESIA (Halmahera I.). Combination in Diacamma: Emery, 1887b: 439. Subspecies of cupreum: Emery, 1887b: 439. Revived status as species: Emery, 1897b: 152; Emery, 1911d: 66. Senior synonym of waigeuensis: Bolton, 1995b: 170.
- waigeuensis. Diacamma rugosum subsp. waigeuensis Donisthorpe, 1942e: 703 (w.) NEW GUINEA. Junior synonym of purpureum: Bolton, 1995b: 171.

Ponera purpurea
Holotype worker in Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Labelled “Gil” (= Gilolo (Halmahera) I.), and with a Donisthorpe type-label.
A second specimen, identical to the holotype and mounted in the same manner, is present in Oxford University Museum of Natural History, but the locality label does not appear to read “Gil.”
