Camponotus yessensis nests in dead portions of tree trunks, dry logs and stumps (Morisita, 1941; Yasumatsu, 1941; Yasumatsu & Brown, 1951). It is widely distributed in the Japanese archipelago in mountains at moderate elevations, but is sporadic and rare (Japanese Ant Image Database). It is rare in South Korea and is known from only one locality. It was found in dry logs at the coniferous forest level (576 m) (Hong, 2023).
Identification
This species is easily distinguished from other Japanese ants of subgenus Camponotus by its dense, long erect hairs (Japanese Ant Image Database).
