Nomenclature
The following information is derived from Barry Bolton's Online Catalogue of the Ants of the World.
- coxalis. Formica coxalis Smith, F. 1859a: 136 (s.) INDONESIA (Aru Is).
- Type-material: holotype major worker.
- Type-locality: Indonesia: Aru Is, “Aru 45” (A.R. Wallace).
- [Notes (i): Donisthorpe, 1932c: 452, cites 1w major OXUM; (confirmed by Bolton (unpublished notes) 1978); (ii) there is also a minor worker in OXUM, labelled “Aro 45” and with a blue Smith det. label. In the original description Smith mentions only the major worker; the minor should therefore be excluded from the type-series (Bolton (unpublished notes) 1978).].

The following notes on F. Smith type specimens have been provided by Barry Bolton (details):
Formica coxalis
Holotype worker (major) in Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Labelled “Aru 45.” There is also a minor worker in Oxford University Museum of Natural History, labelled “Aro 45” and with a blue Smith det. label. In the original description Smith mentions only the major worker. The minor is therefore excluded from the type-series. Note also the different spellings, Aru versus Aro.
