The following information is derived from Barry Bolton's Online Catalogue of the Ants of the World.

  • certus. Aenictus certus Westwood, 1842: 79 (m.) (no state data).
    • Type-material: holotype (?) male.
    • [Note: no indication of number of specimens is given.]
    • Type-locality: none stated “Habitat ?”: (no further data) (“In Mus. Soc. Linn. Lond.”).
    • [Notes (i): type-locality perhaps India (Bingham, 1903: 10); (ii) Bingham comments that the “type….is in very bad condition”.]
    • Type-depository: LSLC.
    • Status as species: Smith, F. 1859b: 9; Roger, 1863b: 41; Mayr, 1863: 394; Smith, F. 1871a: 336; Dalla Torre, 1893: 7; Bingham, 1903: 10 (redescription); Emery, 1910b: 30; Bolton, 1995b: 59; Bharti, Guénard, et al. 2016: 20.

Description

Unless otherwise noted the text for the remainder of this section is reported from (Bingham 1903)

Another doubtful species is Aenictus certus, described by Westwood without locality (Arcan. Entom. i, 2 (1842), p. 79). The type is in the British Museum, but is in very bad condition. Dalla Torre, in his Catalogue of the Formicida, gives the habitat of this species as India; but on what authority I do not know. I give a brief description

Male

Closely resembles A. ambiguus. Shuck., but is smaller and lighter in colour. Head black; thorax, legs and abdomen honey yellow: head transverse, but longer than in A. ambiguus; scutellum not so prominent, narrower and compressed; metanotum with a very distinct basal portion. Pedicel flat above, a little concave at the extreme base; pygidium strongly convex, entire, with no longitudinally impressed medial line.
