Countries Occupied

Number of countries occupied by this species based on AntWiki Regional Taxon Lists. In general, fewer countries occupied indicates a narrower range, while more countries indicates a more widespread species.

Nomenclature

The following information is derived from Barry Bolton's Online Catalogue of the Ants of the World.

  • acutinode. Monomorium acutinode Collingwood & Agosti, 1996: 341, fig. 14 (w.q.) OMAN.
    • Type-material: holotype worker, 1 paratype worker, 1 paratype queen.
    • Type-locality: holotype Oman: Qarn al-Alam, 31.v.1989 (M.D. Gallagher); paratypes with same data.
    • Type-depository: unknown (possibly in WMLC, possibly in OMHN if Gallagher material has been retained there).
    • Status as species: Collingwood, et al. 2011: 432; Borowiec, L. 2014: 114.
    • Distribution: Oman, United Arab Emirates.

Description

Worker

Holotype: HL 0.91; HW 0.76; SL 0.82; EL 0.25; CI 83.8; SI 107.

The head of this species is more rectangular than in the other members of this group. The petiole is a high cone in profile 0.28-0.29 mm and narrow in dorsal view, 0.21 mm. The head and ali trunk are less sculptured than in Monomorium areniphilum but the main difference is the high, relatively narrow petiole.

Queen

The queen has a high, sharply angled petiole which, unlike in the other species, is almost smooth with very faint sculpture and the dorsum is emarginate. The M. areniphilum queen also has a high node but it is much more sculptured with a smoothly rounded crest.

Type Material

Holotype: queen, Oman, Qarn al-Alam, 31.V.1989, M.D. Gallagher.-Paratypes: 1 worker, 1 queen, same series as holotype.
