Taxonomic Notes
Steiner et al. (2018) - Based on its distribution area, M. tataricus could belong to either Messor ponticus or Messor muticus. The original description cannot be interpreted morphologically, and the types are unavailable (A.G. Radchenko, Museum and Institute of Zoology of Polish Academy of Sciences, pers. comm.). We therefore consider M. tataricus as nomen dubium.
