Main Fields of Research:
Social insects, Hymenoptera: Formicidae; behavior and evolution. Social parasitism in ants. Queen polymorphism in ants. Monogyny, polygyny and related social structures. Ecto- and endoparasites of ants.
As a retired person I cannot do much research. I have been overlooking the growing field of pet-ant keeping and pet ant trade via internet companies. In cooperation with the Deutsche Ameisenschutzwarte (DASW), I had applied to the German government to develop a legal restriction of importation and trading of ants (Formicidae) from foreign countries (Europe and overseas). However, in 2006 the responsible BfN (Bundesamt für Naturschutz) at our Ministry of Environment has declined our application with respect to EU-rules: It is said to be too difficult to achieve any restrictions of international trading among EU-countries.
