BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Jean-Claude Braekman, Ph.DProfessor of Organic Chemistry and Director of the Department of Organic Chemistry of Faculty of Sciences at the "Université Libre de Bruxelles"

Prof. Jean-Claude Braekman obtained his PhD from the "Université Libre de Bruxelles" in Belgium, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at Mc Master University in Hamilton, Canada.He then completed a five years Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stanford University, in California.Early in his career, Prof. Braekman focused on the study of bioactive secondary metabolites derived from insects, marine invertebrates and African plants, in particular their isolation, the determination of their structure, their synthesis and biosynthesis and the structure/activity relationships inherent to these molecules.This particular research interest lead him to carry out various field research stays around the world: at the biological station of Roscoff, France, at the Leopold III biological station of Laing Island, Papua New-Guinea, at the laboratories of the USDA, Gainesville, Florida and at the Smithsonian Institute for Tropical Research in Panama.In 1995, Prof. Braekman was appointed at the head of the Department of Organic Chemistry of Faculty of Sciences at the "Université Libre de Bruxelles".During his notorious academic career he has lead or taken part into several national or international research programmes and has published 192 scientific papers as well as 17 reviews or book chapters.He has also supervised 40 PhD theses and 73 Master degree theses.Prof. Braekman serves as General Secretary for the "Société Royale de Chimie" in Belgium and is a member of the "Académie Royale des Sciences d'Outre-Mer de Belgique.
