Nomenclature
The following information is derived from Barry Bolton's Online Catalogue of the Ants of the World.
- phalangium. Aphaenogaster phalangium Emery, 1890b: 47, pl. 5, figs. 6, 7 (w.m.) COSTA RICA.
- Type-material: lectotype worker (by designation of Longino & Cover, 2004: 10); paralectotype workers (number not stated).
- Type-locality: lectotype Costa Rica: Alajuela, 1889 (A. Alfaro); paralectotypes: with same data, Costa Rica: Jimenez, 1889 (A. Alfaro).
- [Note: the original syntype males were misidentified as conspecific; they are now determined as araneoides and excluded from the type-series (Longino & Cover, 2004: 10).]
- Type-depository: MSNG.
- [Also described as new by Emery, 1894k: 54.]
- Combination in Aphaenogaster (Ischnomyrmex): Forel, 1899c: 59;
- combination in Aphaenogaster (Deromyrma): Emery, 1915d: 71.
- Status as species: Dalla Torre, 1893: 104; Forel, 1899c: 59; Emery, 1915d: 71; Emery, 1921f: 65; Mann, 1922: 24; Kempf, 1972a: 23; Bolton, 1995b: 72; Longino & Cover, 2004: 10; Mackay & Dash, 2016: 8; Mackay & Mackay, 2017: 353 (redescription); Fernández & Serna, 2019: 799.
