BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Published between 1874 and 1905. An eminent French hymenopterologist, Mr. Ernest Andre, of Gray, France. In 1898 elected as a corresponding member of the American Entomological Society: André, Ernest, 1838-1911.

Established at Beaune (Cote d'Or), formaly as a wine merchant, Edmond Andre later started as an entomological bookseller and general Natural History Agent, on an extended scale. His published entomological notes, &., were numerous; but his principal work was the "Species des Hymenpteres d'Europe et d' Algerie", commenced in 1879, and continued, with the aid of his brother and other Hymenopterists, until his death. The portion concerning the Braconidae was supplied by the Rev. T.A. Marshall. It is to be hoped that this most important work will be continued. He became a memeber of the Societe Entomologique de France in 1879, and joined the Entomological Society of London in 1880. He was also a member of the Berlin and Stettin Societies.

ANT TAXONOMY

The André brothers described more than 100 species of ants. Unfortunately, not many Americans are yet familiar with this great work of Andre, which was begun some years ago by Mons. Edmond Andre, and since his death, is being completed by his brother, Mons. Ernest Andre, a noted hymenopterologist.
