Silky Carpenter Ants
Diagnosis: Emery (1925), Workers and queens. - Medium-sized species with elongate bodies; body form similar to that of Tanaemyrmex. Head of minors of form Alpha, sometimes quite elongated; in C. angusticeps, Emery (AntWiki, AntWeb), the elongation and narrowness become extreme: minors with head narrower in front than behind and posterior head margin reduced. Dorsum of worker mesosoma continuous, propodeum sometimes impressed posteriorly, forming saddle-like profile. Cuticle matte, especially in workers, coated with more-or-less dense, silky pubescence, particularly on gaster. Male. - Similar to Tanaemyrmex.
Geographical distribution of species. - India, all of continental Africa, Mauritius, Canary Islands, Spain, Provence, Sicily, Calabria.
(Translated and edited by B. E. Boudinot, 16 February 2017.)
Myrmosericus is currently a subgenus of Camponotus.
Nomenclature
The following information is derived from Barry Bolton's Online Catalogue of the Ants of the World.
- MYRMOSERICUS [subgenus of Camponotus]
- Myrmosericus Forel, 1912i: 91 [as subgenus of Camponotus]. Type-species: Formica rufoglauca, by subsequent designation of Wheeler, W.M. 1913a: 81.
