Specimen Labels

Mustachioed Carpenter Ants

Diagnosis: Emery (1925): "Workers - Large yellow species; caste dimorphism pronounced. Head of major wider than long, with rounded sides and posteriorly emaringate; head of minor workers longer than broad, with sides fairly straight, and posterior margin convex. Clypeus very short, neither carinate medially nor lobate anteriorly. Psammophore present: clypeus, near posterior margin, with transverse ridge bearing several long stiff setae; similar setae inserted along dorsal and ventral margins of mandibles, as well as tuft on prementum. Mandibles as in Myrmoxygenys. Palps short, thin, inconspicuous. Mesosomal dorsum continuously rounded in profile view. Petiolar node wedge-shaped. Queen.- (According to Forel) Similar to major worker. Male. - Black in color, bearing psammophore on clypeus, mandibles, and prementum. Mandibles subfalcate [linear].

Geographical distribution of species. - South Africa.
