Summary

Fig. 1: Queen of Leptothorax goesswaldi (top left) bites off the antennae of a host species queen (Leptothorax acervorum). She had penetrated the host colony in August of the preceding year, has spent the winter in the host colony, and now in spring begins to mutilate the host colony queens (L.acervorum is usually polygynous). She develops fertility while the host queens, unable to solicit food, slowly die. The host colony larvae are still shrivelled as is normal during the winter.
