Identification

Bolton (2000) - A member of the cordovensis complex in the Strumigenys mandibularis-group. With gastral pilosity the same as Strumigenys monstra but with shorter and differently shaped mandibles, fewer erect hairs on head, fully costulate postpetiole disc and longer basigastral costulae.

Description

Worker

TL 3.4-3.6, HL 0.74-0.79, HW 0.56-0.60, CI 76-79, ML 0.73-0.76, MI 96-98, SL 0.60-0.63, SI 99-103, PW 0.35-0.38, AL 0.74-0.78 (4 measured).

Characters of cordovensis complex. Distal preapical tooth closer to apicodorsal than to proximal preapical tooth. Outer margins of mandibles divergent anteriorly at full closure. In profile mandible sloping weakly downward between level of distal preapical tooth and apical fork, but not shaped as in monstra. Stiff standing hairs that are flattened and expanded apically are distributed as follows: one in apicoscrobal position; a pair on vertex close to occipital margin; one at pronotal humerus; a pair on mesonotum. By contrast first gastral tergite with numerous fine erect flagellate hairs that arise all over the sclerite and are not restricted to the basal third. Fine posteriorly curved subflagellate hairs occur on petiole and postpetiole. Gland bullae small on femoral dorsa of middle and hind legs, located at or proximal of femoral midlength. Declivity of propodeum with lower lobe longer and more acute than upper. Petiole node reticulate-punctate, broader than long in dorsal view. Lateral lobe of petiole node not extended alongside to level of anterior face of node. Postpetiole with 5-9 longitudinal costulae that traverse the length of the disc. Basigastral costulae numerous and sharply defined, longer than thickness of postpetiolar spongiform collar in dorsal view, almost equal to length of postpetiole disc.
