Flat-head Carpenter Ants

Diagnosis. Emery (1925). - "Worker. - Medium to small species; caste dimorphism weakly marked; body squat. Head depressed, elongated, narrower anteriorly, broadly concave posteriorly in majors, truncated in minors. Clypeus very depressed, without median longitudinal carina in majors, subcarinate in minors, with or without rounded anterior lobe, sometimes clypeus anteromedially incised; clypeal dimples remarkably large and deep. Frontal carinae straight, slightly diverging posteriorly; antennal insertions situated further posteriorly than in most other groups, almost at midlength of frontal carinae (similar to Colobopsis). Mandibles short, arched, armed with 5 or 6 teeth. Antennae short; antennomeres of flagellum remarkably short. Mesosomal dorsum rounded, with or without impression at mesonotal-propodeal suture. Petiolar node squmiform, tall and vertically-oriented. Legs short, tibiae neither compressed nor hairy. Male unknown; Forel described a female.

Geographical distribution of species. - Malacca, Sunda Islands.

Ethology. - The species of this group were found in the swollen base of the leaves of myrmecophilic palms of the genus Korthalsia."
