One task editors can do to help improve Antwiki is to add images of workers to species page Taxoboxes. This help page provides instructions on how this is accomplished.

Introduction

To the right is an example of a typical species page taxobox with montage images displayed in the Antwiki standard format. Having a standard for displaying taxobox images insures consistency across all the species pages.

Below is the information that needs to entered to create the taxobox you see on the right.

The lines relevant to adding images are the two lines near the top just below "|name=" and the last four lines after "|binomial_authority=".

When adding images it is important that only these lines are added to the Taxobox and that no other text is added or changed!

A step by step guide

Species Images

Ideally four montage images from a single worker should be included for each species, including views of the front of the head and side and top of the body along with an image of the specimen labels. An exception would be if a species is only known from reproductive castes where worker images would be replaced by queen and/or male images.

The best possible set of montage images are from a specimen that is deposited in an accessible collection and includes specimen level collection data. Images of ants in your own expertly curated collection, or images from a museum that you have permission to photograph and post to the web, or Antweb images may all fit this criteria. In all cases please check that copyright is not being violated, ideally by including a Creative Commons license.

This should be obvious - It is important that the images you post in the taxabox are properly identified.

Adding Images to the Taxobox

Overview

Taxobox images should include the following:

the frontal/head view of a worker, placed near the top of the taxobox
a set of two images lower in the taxobox
- side/lateral-view of the body
- top/dorsal-view of the body
specimen data can be included in one of two ways
- via a link to an image of the specimen label(s) and placed just after the dorsal-view image (preferred)
- on the image File page of the specimen montage images

The details of how to accomplish this are explained in the following.

An "empty" taxobox

Here is a typical taxobox entry without images:

Head View Image

The coding for the first image is added near the top of the taxobox just after the line that begins with "|name" and before the line "|regnum."

The image specification includes two lines. The first line takes the form "|image = filename.jpg".

The filename is the name of the image file without the "File:" prefix. For example, the image file File:Stenamma-impar-MCZ001H.jpg is added to the taxobox this way:

Taxabox images are all kept to a standard size by including the following line which uses the width template ("{{width}}")::

Profile and Dorsal Images

The information specifying the second (profile or lateral view) and third (dorsal view) image is placed in the taxobox just after the line that begins "|binomial authority" (or "|trinomial_authority =" if this is a subspecies).

These images are separated from the text above them by a line entered as "----" (four dash characters). You can also enter "<hr>" but this is harder to type. The images are specified by including the file name and width term (using the width template, not a number), like this:

You should include a space between the two image specifications as this provides for a break in the display of the lateral and dorsal view images.

If you want to display an image of the specimen labels this should also be added here. Instead of showing this image it it is better to include a link to minimise page clutter. This is done by adding a colon (":") before "File:" and replacing the width template (or value) with the link text ("Specimen labels"). This line should be given after the dorsal view image specification and separated by an empty line. This gives the following at the end of the taxobox:

There may be additional lines of information given after the "|binomial authority." line in the taxabox. This will be the case if there are synonyms or subspecies for the species. When present you will to place the image specifications after the line that begins "|binomial authority" and before this additional text.

Removing the "Image Needed" Category

Every species page that lacks taxobox images is included in the category Category:Need_Images. You should remove this category from any page where you add images to the taxobox. You can do this by going to the bottom of the species page, in edit mode, and deleting [[Category:Need_Images]]. This category is listed on the last line of the page.

If the last line does not include either of the categories "[[category:Need Overview]]" or "[[category:Need Body Text]]" (that is, there are no longer any "Need" categories on the page) you can also remove the Stub template ("{{Stub}}") from the top of the Category section. Genus Page Taxoboxes

There are a few differences between the image display format for genus versus species pages.

A caption is needed to show what species is being displayed. A caption should be placed under the image of the head and between the lateral and dorsal images.

The second (lateral) and third (dorsal) images:

are placed under the line starting with "|diversity".
to set the images off from the Diversity/Species List information a line is placed before them. This is accomplished by adding "----" or an <hr> tag.

Finding Species Pages with no Taxobox Images

Is there a way to find a smaller subset of species that need images besides looking through the entire Need Images category?

You can do a search using Special:MultiCategorySearch and look for pages by the Need Images category and a genus category (e.g., Category:Pheidole).
