The identity and status of this taxon have not been ascertained. It is included in Formica by Barry Bolton's Online Catalogue as a taxon at species-rank, to dissociate it from its original combination in Myrmecocystus, and to separate it from its original rank as a subspecies of Myrmecocystus melliger. The name californicus is not mentioned in Snelling's 1976 revision of Myrmecocystus.
