RESEARCH INTERESTS TAXONOMY OF ASIAN SPECIES OF THE GENUS PHEIDOLE Since 1996 I have studied taxonomy of Asian ants, especially the genus Pheidole (Formicidae: Myrmicinae). In 2001 I published, as a result of my doctoral program, “A revision of the Bornean species of the ant genus Pheidole (Eguchi, 2001)”, and I have already described dozens of new species of Pheidole from Borneo and Vietnam. I have nearly finished to prepare a manuscript entitled “A Revision of Northern Vietnamese Species of the ant genus Pheidole” which will appear hopefully within 2008. Next, I plan to deal with Pheidole species of S. Vietnam and the mainland Thailand, or those of the lesser Sundas (Bali, Lombok and Sumbawa Islands, Indonesia).

TAXONOMY OF ANTS IN VIETNAM

Since 1999 Dr. BUI Tuan Viet (Institute of Ecology and Biological resources, Hanoi) and I have intensively explored ant faunas in various localities of Vietnam. Until now we have already described eleven new species and one new genus, although the majority of our specimens are still undetermined. Complexity of topology and climate in Vietnam undoubtedly maintains an extremely high diversity of ants. It is no wonder that the total number of ant species in Vietnam is over 500. In order to develop the taxonomic capacity in myrmecology in Vietnam, we plan to propel the four actions:1) exploring local ant faunas; 2) giving species codes to all species; 3) overviewing ant genera known from Vietnam; 4) describing unnamed taxa and reviewing higher taxa known from Vietnam and adjacent areas. In relevant to the third action we are now preparing a CD book entitled "Diversity of Ants in Vietnam" which will provides an overview of Vietnamese ants at the genus level with full-colored pictorial identification keys.
