BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

The older brother of Edmond Andre continued to publish ant taxonomic papers for 10 years after his younger brother's (Edmond André) death in 1891. Died in Gray, Haute-Saone, France in June 1914.

ANT TAXONOMY

The André brothers described more than 100 species of ants. Unfortunately, not many Americans are yet familiar with this great work of Andre, which was begun some years ago by Mons. Edmond Andre, and since his death, is being completed by his brother, Mons. Ernest Andre, a noted hymenopterologist.

Note: The following entries include the works of two brothers, André, E. (1838-1914) and André, J.E.E. (1844-1891). Both had the name Ernest, and both used this name (or its initial) extensively in their publications, rendering correct authorship confusing in several cases. To obviate this they are catalogued here artificially, as if a single person.

Primary location of author's collection: Musee National d'Histoire Naturelle.
